Colorado agencies save rafter in Gore Canyon experiencing medical emergency

Sky High News

On Saturday, Oct. 5 around 3:45 p.m., Grand County Search and Rescue was notified of a rafter on the Colorado River in Gore Canyon who had suffered a seizure. Gore Canyon is southwest of Kremmling and is known for its challenging whitewater rapids.

The rescue operation was carried out by multiple agencies including Grand County Search and Rescue, Grand County Sheriff’s Office, Grand County EMS and the Union Pacific Railroad.

Teams made up of personnel from Grand County Search and Rescue and Grand County EMS were transported into the canyon by Union Pacific’s hi-rail truck, which is a vehicle that can travel on the tracks. Others traveled into the canyon by all-terrain vehicle and foot.

Rafters assisted the victim who climbed up to the railroad tracks to meet with the rescue teams inside the Union Pacific vehicle. Grand County EMS provided on-site medical care to stabilize the individual.

In a press release from Grand County Search and Rescue, it gives thanks to the responding agencies as well as the private landowner who provided access to the river and railroad tracks. The press release reads that this access was “critical to the success of the rescue.”
