DENVER (KDVR) — Denver police are investigating a shooting that happened inside an apartment unit at the intersection of Humboldt and East 29th Avenue.
Police say they are still in the process of gathering details, but neighbors who live nearby gave FOX31 some insight into what unfolded.
"It had to be about 11 or maybe 12," said East 29th Avenue neighbor Caroline Maxwell.
Denver police and crime scene units were still on scene well into the afternoon investigating the shooting. FOX31 crews saw officers going in and out of a unit at the Willow Apartments.
"My son heard the gunshot and he woke me up and said 'Someone is shooting and screaming they got shot in the face,'" said Maxwell.
She lives two doors down from where officers appeared to center their investigation.
“I think probably it could have been avoided before now because they are always over there fighting and arguing all the time," said Maxwell. “So, the boyfriend and girlfriend that lives there got into a dispute and she called her brother and mother over here to the scene. That is when her brother got shot in the face."
Maxwell said she has been living in the area for three years.
“This is the first time I’ve even seen police over here,” she said.
She worried the situation could have escalated more.
“The shooter, I don’t know him, but I see him a lot," said Maxwell. "For me, it could have been anybody. He could have got mad at anybody over here. He could get into it with anybody over here and shot anybody over here. They got to know how to control the guns and the shootings.”
The victim in the shooting was taken to the hospital, but the extent of their injuries is unknown at this time. Denver police told FOX31 that as soon as they learn more they'll pass along those updates.
