Obituary: Gregory Alan “Barney” Barnes

Gregory Alan Barnes, known to many as “Barney” passed away in his sleep on July 2nd 2024 at his home in Arizona. Greg loved Grand County and was heartbroken when his health did not allow him to live in the place he called home any longer. Born in Chicago, Greg’s family moved to Colorado in the early 60’s. Always a hard worker and entrepreneur, he moved to Grand Lake after high school in 1969. Working in construction, tending bar at the Foghorn, and opening a gift shop “The Great White Buffalo Trading Company” in Grand Lake. In the early 70’s Greg and Danny Archer started “Mountain High Concrete”, with high standards and a quality reputation, they built many of the foundations in the Fraser Valley, Winter Park and Grand County.
Greg and his wife Carey met in the early 70’s and had two wonderful sons, Dustin and Patrick. Family life was all about softball in the Fraser Valley for many years where Greg Played with lifelong friends and served as softball commissioner. Those were many of his favorite years in Grand County. In 1990 Greg and Carey purchased Daven Haven Lodge, opening a new chapter in life at the other end of the valley, raising the boys in the hospitality industry, owning a successful restaurant and small family resort. Greg was the welcoming host at the Backstreet Steakhouse for over 30 years. He is very much missed every day. His life will be celebrated at Daven Haven on October 6th 1-4pm. Please join us in celebrating a kind soul, hard worker, loving husband and father, and all-around great guy.
