Rockies spring training recap: Ezequiel Tovar goes 3-for-3, Dakota Hudson debuts

On the mound: Right-hander Dakota Hudson, pegged as Colorado’s No. 4 starter, pitched his first game in a Rockies uniform. Hudson worked his way through a scoreless first inning, allowing one hit, walking two and striking out one. … Right-hander Peter Lamber, competing for the final spot in the rotation, worked two innings, giving up two runs on two hits with one walk and two strikeouts. … Rockies pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts.

At the plate: Shortstop Ezequiel Tovar, hitting leadoff, had a big day for the Rockies. He went 3-for-3, singling off Cubs lefty starter Drew Smyly in the first, blasted a solo homer off Smyly in the third and doubled in the fifth off Daniel Palencia. Tovar is hitting .556 with a 1.556 OPS in the early going in the Cactus League. … Elehuris Montero, who’s on the roster bubble and out of options, is making a strong push. Starting at first base, he hit 2-for-3 and launched his second homer of spring, a two-run shot off Palencia in the fifth. … All told, the Rockies wrapped out 18 hits.

Prospect watch: Infielder Julio Carreras, who advanced to Triple-A last season, certainly caught the attention of the Rockies’ brass. He blasted a three-run shot to left-center off Smyly in the second.
