DENVER (KDVR) — Oct. 1 marks the 25th anniversary of the opening of Ball Arena. In its 25 years, the arena has seen thousands of acts take the stage and played home to some of the greatest and most heartbreaking moments in Colorado sports history.

Pepsi Center opening

Now known as the Ball Arena, the venue spent its first 20 years as the Pepsi Center. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on Nov. 20, 1997. But the space wouldn't see its first event until Oct. 1, 1999.

The Pepsi Center started off its career with a statement, hosting Celine Dion as its first act. Dion is one of the highest-grossing touring artists of all time and sold out the arena. She dedicated the christening event to those impacted by the Columbine shooting which happened in April of the same year. She donated the entire six-figure income from the concert to the Colorado Organization for Victim Assistance. The first song she played was "Let's Talk About Love," where she was joined by a chorus of children wearing "We are Columbine" shirts.

The first sporting event was held in the arena 12 days later on Oct. 13, when the Colorado Avalanche took on the Boston Bruins. The Avs won the contest 2-1 with Avs icon Milan Hejduk netting the first goal in arena history.

Nearly a month after opening, the Denver Nuggets would have their first game in the new venue on Nov. 2. They were also able to walk away with a win, beating the Phoenix Suns 107-102 in overtime. Nick Van Exel was the Nuggets' star man that day, scoring 32 points to go with 9 rebounds and 9 assists.

Stan Kroenke

On July 7, 2000, a major acquisition would shake up the scene at the Pepsi Center. A Missouri businessman and minority owner of the St. Louis Rams, Stan Kroenke, purchased the Pepsi Center, Colorado Avalanche and Denver Nuggets from Liberty Media Corporation for $404 million after the sale was approved by the NHL and NBA.

“This is an exciting day for me,” said Kroenke. “This is something I've always wanted to do. It's certainly a dream come true for me.”

His company Kroenke Sports and Entertainment still owns the Nuggets, Avs and the renamed Ball Arena 25 years later.

He has also acquired the lacrosse team, the Colorado Mammoth, who call the arena home.

The company has expanded its portfolio to include the Colorado Rapids, Los Angeles Rams, Arsenal FC in London and has dabbled in E-sports with the Los Angeles Gladiators and Los Angeles Guerrillas.
