DENVER (KDVR) — Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser's office confirmed Monday that it is investigating CBZ Management, which operates several apartment complexes in Aurora at the center of reports about gang violence.
No further information about the investigation from the AG's office was available.
In early August, the City of Aurora shut down an apartment building operated by CBZ Management at 1568 Nome Street, citing code violations. Several other complexes operated by the company have since entered receivership.
CBZ Management has claimed that the issues were instead caused by Venezuelan gang violence.
In October, the company issued a statement and claimed it had been trying to fix problems at its complexes in Aurora since 2023.
The company claims it made AG Weiser's office aware of the issue in late June with a letter later posted on social media.
In the letter, the company alleged that gangs had taken over their properties. This claim has been denied multiple times by city officials.
The story gained national attention after FOX31 obtained video at the Edge at Lowry, another complex operated by CBZ Management, that showed an armed apartment break-in shortly before a shootout at the property left one person seriously injured.
Former President Donald Trump has mentioned the situation on the campaign trail several times, including in the national debate held between him and Vice President Kamala Harris.
Trump also held a rally in Aurora, during which he announced "Operation Aurora," which he claimed would remove migrants who entered the country illegally and who might be involved with gangs.
