DENVER (KDVR) — A snowmobiler was killed while recreating near the Sand Peak area in Rio Blanco County over the weekend.

According to the Rio Blanco County Sheriff's Office, on Sunday at around 3:50 p.m., the county's communication center received an inReach SOS alert from a Garmin GPS. The alert was sent from near the Sand Peak area, which is about 45 miles northeast of Meeker. According to the sheriff's office, it is an area only accessible by snowmobile.

Garmin GPS received a message that a 38-year-old man was on a snowmobile when he was hurt and not responding.

Meeker Fire Rescue, Rio Blanco County Search and Rescue, Classic Air Medical and the Rio
Blanco County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area to locate the man.

Despite life-saving efforts, the sheriff's office said the man was pronounced dead on scene.

Deputies have not said exactly what happened to the snowmobiler. However, the investigation is ongoing.

The identity of the man will be released pending notification of next of kin.
