On Saturday, East Grand Fire Protection District #4 responded to a vehicle on fire on Wanderer’s Way in Winter Park.
“Upon arrival, they found a 2023 Nissan Rogue fully engulfed in flames,” a news release from the Fraser Winter Park Police Department stated.
The fire occurred at about 7 p.m. According to the police department, a 37-year-old male resident of Hot Sulphur Springs was in the vehicle when it caught flame, along with his dog. The man suffered serious burns to his legs — Grand County Emergency Medical Services arrived on the scene transported him to a Denver hospital for treatment.
“Sadly, the subject’s dog was not able to escape the flames and passed away in the fire,” the police department stated.
Firefighters extinguished the flames, but two other vehicles near the fire suffered minor damage from the heat.
According to Sami Powers, a community member who witnessed the incident, the man seemed to be having “some sort of episode.” Powers told Sky-Hi News that after the police arrived, the man told officers his dog was in the vehicle.
“It was hard to know what started the fire. It seemed like it also had fireworks or something inside,” she said.
According to the police department, the investigation into the cause and origin of the fire is ongoing.
