COLORADO SPRINGS (KXRM) -- The popular convenience store Buc-ee's could be coming to Palmer Lake, but some locals are not happy about it.
Despite how many people would love a Buc-ees in Southern Colorado, the people living in Monument and Palmer Lake are worried it could bring negative attention, and disrupt the peace of the rural town.
"120 pump gas station up at that part of the county would be quite the eyesore," said Mitch LaKind, mayor of Monument.
The proposed location is west of I-25 and east of Beacon Lite Road near the County Line exit.
The town had a meeting about the possibility of the annexation of county land, but some locals are concerned it will bring too much traffic and disrupt the peace of the area.
"As you enter into the county, it would be 24/7 lights that would brighten up the sky that is currently, pretty pitch black around that area. It would impact the homes that are just to the southwest of it... along Beacon Lite," added Mayor LaKind.
Mayor of Palmer Lake Glant Havenar posted about the multi-stage process on Facebook that would be required to move forward, but she says its still early on and no decisions have been made.
"My town's not going to sell them water. We've already told the developer that, and I can't speak to Palmer Lake, but I have a strong sense that they don't have enough water to provide them anyway. But, that would be up to them to answer definitively. So I don't see a benefit coming to this now," said Mayor LaKind.
The Palmer Lake Board of Trustees has scheduled a hearing on Dec. 12 to establish whether Buc-ee's is eligible to move in the direction of annexing county land.
"I'm guessing that there is going to be a lot of people that show up, and I hope Palmer Lake plans accordingly, because I don't think they can hold as many people that plan to show up," said Mayor LaKind.
The popular convience store has roots in Texas, and has become a must-stop spot for travelers.
There is one location in Johnstown, located south of Fort Collins. If this goes through, the El Paso County spot would be the second location in Colorado.
