Teller County officials lifted mandatory evacuation orders for roughly 700 homes on Wednesday as firefighters gained 80% containment on the Highland Lakes fire.
The human-caused wildfire sparked in a Divide subdivision Monday and quickly spread to 90 acres, driven by high winds and fueled by dry grasses and trees.
One home was destroyed by the fire, but fire crews were able to stop the flames from reaching other houses, according to Teller County Sheriff Jason Mikesell.
Sheriff’s officials have not named the person who allegedly started the fire, which was 166 acres as of Tuesday night.
Mandatory evacuation orders were lifted as of noon Wednesday and a checkpoint is in place at County Road 51 and County Road 511. Neighborhoods will be open to the public starting at 4 p.m.
