Community members are invited to attend Granby’s first Día de los Muertos celebration at Middle Park High School on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 4-8 p.m.
The free event, hosted by Destination Granby and in partnership with the committee Grand Latin, invites everyone to come and honor loved ones while experiencing the rich cultural traditions of Día de los Muertos, which translates to Day of the Dead in English.
A mariachi band, Las Dahlias, will be playing live music along with singer Xander Duran. In addition to live music, a dance performance by Basaseachi Ballet Folklorico will also take place.
Other activities, including fun crafts, will be available for kids of all ages.
Around the venue, cultural displays of traditional Mexican altars, also known as ofrendas, and artwork will be available to admire. Attendees are also welcome to honor their deceased loved ones by bringing a small trinket, flowers or a small photo of their loved ones.
Sugar skull murals created by local artists will be available for auction. Mexican food and treats will be available at the event as well.
While it is not required, attendees can dress up as La Catrina, an iconic symbol of Día de los Muertos, and compete in La Catrina costume contest. La Catrina is a skeleton known for her toothy grin and oversized feathered hat, so anyone planning to compete should get creative and don their best hat and face paint.
