It’s the time of year when homeowners are ready to start fixing up their yards, and Colorado residents who want to pour less pollution into the air have new opportunities to receive discounts on electric and battery-powered equipment.
Colorado residents this year can receive a 30% discount on electric lawnmowers, leaf blowers, weed trimmers and other equipment through a state rebate program that runs through 2026 at participating retailers.
And beginning Saturday, residents in 13 zip codes in Adams and Denver counties can receive a separate $300 voucher for an electric lawnmower when they trade in old, gas-powered mowers through the Regional Air Quality Council’s Mow Down Pollution program.
The voucher program is funded in large part by Suncor Energy after it was penalized for selling dirty gasoline that did not meet federal standards to reduce ozone pollution during the summer.
Those eligible for the $300 voucher for an electric lawn mower must live in the following zip codes: 80022, 80024, 80221, 80640, 80229, 80260, 80216, 80205, 80211, 80207, 80238, 80239, 80249. Customers need to bring identification or a bill that shows their home address.
Trade-ins will be available on the following dates:
- 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday: Commerce City Ace Hardware, 6900 Eudora Drive
- 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 20: Mile High Ace Hardware & Garden, 2700 W. 104th Ave., Federal Heights
- 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 27: Chambers Place Ace Hardware, 4830 Chambers Road, Denver
If the money for the vouchers has not been exhausted, a fourth trade-in event will be held on May 4, although that location has not been determined.
The 30% discount for any Colorado residents went into effect Jan. 1 as the result of a law passed by the Colorado General Assembly. Under that program, a 30% discount is given at the register — no forms or paperwork needed. But not every store in Colorado is participating.
And those who qualify for a Mow Down Pollution voucher also can receive the 30% discount, said David Sabados, a spokesman for the Regional Air Quality Council.
Here is a list of Colorado retailers that are offering the 30% discount, according to research by The Denver Post and the Colorado Public Interest Research Group:
