DENVER (KDVR) — Starting Jan. 1, 2025, a new street parking ordinance goes into effect for unincorporated Arapahoe County, targeting people who illegally park clunkers.

The ordinance targets abandoned or inoperable motor vehicles or ones with expired or no tags, like some found in the neighborhood at the corner of Iowa and Beeler. Homeowners association President Mark Lampert led the charge, saying that some vehicles have no business parking on these streets.

The measure was approved by county commissioners on Tuesday. It will allow both sheriff deputies and other designated staff to issue parking citations and provide for the towing and removal of abandoned vehicles and vehicles that obstruct the road or interfere with road maintenance.

Violation fines will increase from $22 to $150.

Arapahoe County resident and mom Hannah Lantzy says she also has seen an increased number of clunkers parked on the streets.

Lampert said the vehicles also create further eye sores by leaving oil stains and garbage on the streets, which he says is affecting home sales. He hopes the increase in fines will maybe help curb the cars.
