Photos: Denver Halloween costumes from over 50 years ago

DENVER (KDVR) — Throughout the years, Halloween costumes have taken on a life of their own. While there weren't any Spirit Halloween pop-up stores until the late '80s, in years prior, people still went all out for the spooky season.

The Molly Brown House Museum said Halloween started to become popular in the late 1800s. The first costumes were made out of crepe paper with anything from full-sized pumpkin costumes to small cat masks.

Heading into the mid-to-late-1900s, people across Colorado stepped up their dress-up game.

The Denver Library holds a collection of photos from the 1960s-80s, which show people in costumes of anything from homemade trick-or-treating outfits to Darth Vader and skeleton costumes.

Here's a look into Halloween in Denver throughout the years:

While witches' hats and skeletons were popular decades ago, those aren't predicted to be the most popular costumes in Denver this year.

This year, Google Trends predicted the top costumes will be anything from Shrunken Head Bob from “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” to Sabrina Carpenter.

While the costumes have become more extravagant throughout the years, the love of Halloween has stayed the same for over a century.
