A 16-year-old suspect has been arrested on investigation of manslaughter Saturday after another teenager died in a late night Denver shooting Friday.

At 10:31 p.m., Denver officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 3800 block of North Walnut Street, according to a Saturday news release from the police department.

When they arrived at the scene, officers found a 17-year-old boy suffering from a gunshot wound, the release stated. Paramedics transported the teenager to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Nearly 12 hours after the shooting — around 10 a.m. — officers arrested a 16-year-old suspect on suspicion of manslaughter, police said in a Saturday morning update on social media.

Manslaughter refers to killing someone without planning the crime ahead of time or in a situation where killing was not intentional, while murder refers to killing someone by planning the crime ahead of time.

While the investigation is ongoing, police believe the victim and suspect knew each other before the shooting, according to Saturday’s release.

The suspect’s identity will not be released because he is a juvenile, police officials said in the release.

The Denver District Attorney’s Office will make the final determination regarding possible charges in the case, and the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner will release the identity of the victim at a later date.

    This is a developing story.
