Aurora police have detained a suspect in an armed carjacking that led to a fatal crash Sunday evening.

A driver was killed in the crash at Dayton Street and 19th Avenue after the suspect fled police in a stolen vehicle, according to an Aurora Police Department posting on the social media platform X.

Officers around 7 p.m. had responded to an Aurora 911 report of an armed carjacking near 23rd Avenue and Dallas Street, the police said.

The carjacking victim helped officers quickly locate the stolen vehicle, police said. Then, when officers tried to stop the suspect, the suspect fled in the stolen vehicle, which collided with the other vehicle in the fatal crash.

Aurora traffic investigators went to the scene Sunday night, closing 19th Avenue around the intersection with Dayton, and Dayton between Montview and 17th Avenue, while they looked into what happened. A 17th Judicial District team, Aurora homicide, and gang and robbery investigators also went to the scene, police said.

Criminal charges against the carjacking suspect were pending, police said. The judicial district team is conducting a parallel investigation into the circumstances leading to the crash.

    No other information was released.
