DENVER (KDVR) — A man who worked as a swim coach for the club team "Boulder Swimming" between 1997 and early 2002 was found guilty by a jury on Tuesday of committing sexual assaults on children during his tenure with the team.

Jon Beber, 54, was found guilty by a Boulder jury of two counts of sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust - a pattern of abuse, and one count of sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust. Both are felonies.

20th Judicial District Attorney Michael Dougherty reiterated that the coach abused the underage team members.

“Despite the passage of time, and because of the courage and strength of the victims, the defendant is being held responsible for the abuse and trauma he inflicted upon them," Dougherty said.

Decades after abuse, three victims came forward

The case originated when three victims contacted the 20th Judicial District Attorney's Office in 2022, causing the DA to file charges against Beber accusing him of sexually abusing the three swimmers between 1997 and 2001. When Beber was involved with the elite swim team, no reports were made against him.

However, allegations against him reportedly surfaced during that time, causing him to quit the team and leave Colorado in 2002. Parents allegedly confronted Beber about the inappropriate sexual contact he had with multiple underage swimmers on the team.

Beber had been released on a $30,000 cash, surety or property bond in July 2022, but the bond was revoked after the jury gave its verdicts and he was taken into police custody.

Beber is scheduled to appear for sentencing on July 19.

Additionally, the Boulder DA's office offered community resources like reporting to local law enforcement or reaching out to residents' local victim advocacy organizations for help. In Boulder, residents can call MESA at 303-443-7300. Anyone who has been the victim of abuse
in a sports setting can report to SafeSport at uscenterforsafesport.org/report-aconcern.
