PUEBLO, Colo. (KXRM) — The Pueblo Zoo has an adorable new addition to its animal family. A baby De Brazza's monkey was born to parents Ruby, a 10-year-old female, and Kanoa, a 13-year-old male on March 30.

The baby's gender is still unknown, as it can be difficult to determine until it grows and gets some distance from the mom, the zoo said. The baby is doing well and will be joining its parents in the exhibit.

Ruby and Konoa have been a couple since the exhibit opened in 2018. The exhibit is part of a multi-year capital campaign that included the Safari Cafe, bathrooms, and the African-painted dog exhibit.

De Brazza's monkeys are an old-world species found in central Africa.

“We are beyond delighted about this birth. Since Ruby and Kanoa arrived, we have been dreaming of this day!" said Executive Director Abbie Krause.

The Pueblo Zoo, as a member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, participates in programs such as the Species Survival Plan, which is designed to oversee species populations. These initiatives enable zoos nationwide to effectively manage captive populations of De Brazza’s monkeys while preserving genetic diversity.
