A warm day in Denver and across the eastern side of the state Sunday will be overshadowed by critical fire conditions, according to the National Weather Service in Boulder.

The metro area already got a look at the possible danger, as a small wildfire broke out overnight on the Flatirons in Boulder, Boulder Fire and Rescue reported. Fire crews contained the small blaze early Sunday morning, but the fire weather conditions will persist into Monday, forecasters said.

The high temperature in Denver Sunday is 70 degrees, and the uppers 60s across the plains. winds will strengthen throughout the day and combine with single-digit humidity levels to create the widespread critical fire conditions.

The strongest winds — and highest fire danger — will be focused along and west of the Interstate 25 corridor toward the foothills.

Wind gusts could reach between 40 mph and 65 mph there, while the plains will see gust of about 25 to 35 mph.

Sunday’s Red Flag Warnings for the east will expire at midnight, but Monday could bring additional fire danger.

With Monday’s high temperature nearly reaching the 70s as well, winds will strengthen considerably, forecasters said.

Humidity could have some moderation — with some areas getting between 15% to 20% — but that might not be enough to curb the fire danger.

Enjoy the warm weather while it lasts, though, because a cold front is on the way Tuesday, dropping temperatures to the 40s and bringing snow chances.
