DENVER (KDVR) — The footbridge to Fish Creek Falls in Steamboat Springs will be temporarily closed for part of the summer, authorities announced.

On Wednesday, the U.S. Forest Service said the bridge has been temporarily closed due to lingering structural integrity concerns. The four-mile section of Fish Creek Trail past the bridge will also be closed.

The U.S. Forest Service said the closure is expected to last until July 1 during the high water flows.

"Bridge abutments have been structurally compromised due to high flow levels over the years, resulting in a brief closure in 2023 and now the more consistent seasonal closure to address safety concerns and facilitate repairs." said the U.S. Forest Service in a release.

The timing, cost and nature of the repairs are not known, but engineers are currently working on a plan. This is expected to be a multi-year order through 2027.

The U.S. Forest Service said a temporary fix has been put in place, but the fix only works during lower creek flows and with limited occupancy.

If you had plans to visit Fish Creek Falls during your trip to Steamboat this summer, other parts of the trail are still open.

According to the U.S. Forest Service, the Fish Creek Falls picnic site and upper overlook trail are still open, and the falls can be viewed from those spots. The public may also walk down Fish Creek Trail to the bridge, but they cannot pass.

The U.S. Forest Service said signs will be placed to inform visitors and a Forest Order has been put in place so that law enforcement can facilitate the closure. For more information on closures in the Routt National Forest, visitors can go to the U.S. Forest Service's website.
