DENVER (KDVR) — The Thornton Police Department confirmed Tuesday that a student was arrested for bringing a gun to a Shadow Ridge Middle School basketball game.

Whether the student was a Shadow Ridge student or from another school was not shared. The department said the event was "thoroughly investigated" in a collaboration between the school resource officer, district and school administration and patrol officers.

As of 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday, the student was in police custody, according to the Thornton Police Department. The agency reported that it had increased its presence at the middle school for the day, as well as the rest of the district.

On Monday, the district had no classes for a teacher work day. Tuesday began a week of Colorado Measures of Academic Success testing. The last basketball games were held on Thursday, April 11.

"Please know that we want to protect the children in our communities as well and we do take all threats seriously," the agency shared in a statement.

According to parental reports, the student was also suspended after threatening multiple students and posting on social media that Tuesday was a "big day" and to "not get hit by the bullets."

FOX31 has reached out to Adams 12 Five Star Schools District for comment and information about this incident.
