Vehicle fire near Morrison closes I-70, caused heavy black smoke

DENVER (KDVR) — Fire crews are battling a fully engulfed tanker fire near Morrison. Heavy black smoke can be seen for miles.

At around 9:45 a.m., the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office tweeted about crews responding to westbound Interstate 70 at mile marker 259 for a fully engulfed tanker. Six other vehicles may also be involved.

The sheriff's office is asking drivers to avoid the area for several hours. Both directions of I-70 are closed for firefighting efforts.

According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, I-70 is closed between exit 254, Genesse, to exit 260, C-470.

The sheriff's office said several small grass fires have been extinguished and a hazmat crew has been requested.

It is unclear if any injuries have been reported.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is working with multiple fire departments, CDOT and the Colorado State Patrol.
