Rockies 3, Diamondbacks 0
Friday at Salt River Fields
On the mound: Lefty prospect Carson Palmquist, a non-roster invitee, got the first start of spring and looked sharp. He pitched two scoreless innings and struck out four. Manager Bud Black liked how Palmquist worked the strike zone and threw first-pitch strikes. … Hard-throwing right-hander Riley Pint, cranking his fastball up to 97.6 mph and displaying good movement on his slider, allowed one hit in a scoreless eighth inning. All told, Rockies pitchers struck out 16 D-backs hitters.
At the plate: Backup first baseman and designated hitter Elehuris Montero blasted a 449-foot solo homer to left in the fourth inning off of right-hander Chris Rodriguez. Montero, who’s out of options, continues to show that he can do damage at the plate when he gets the chance. After his final recall from Triple-A Colorado Springs last season on July 25, Montero slashed .270/.328/.489 with nine homers, 10 doubles, one triple and 26 RBIs.
Prospect watch: Corner outfielder Jordan Beck slashed a double down the third baseline in the seventh inning. Beck has a shot to open the regular season at Triple-A.
Up next: Spilt-squad, Rockies at Diamondbacks, 1:10 p.m. Saturday, and Rockies at A’s,1:05 p.m. Saturday.
