On the mound: Minor league call-up Tanner Gordon made the start first major league spring training start of his career and pitched two scoreless innings, striking out two. Gordon was acquired from Atlanta last July, along with right-hander Victor Vodnik, in exchange for right-hander Pierce Johnson.

At the plate: Second baseman Brendan Rodgers continued his torrid spring, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and boosting his average to .414 (12-for-29). … Backup catcher Jacob Stallings hit 2-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI. It was his first multi-hit game of spring. … Third baseman Ryan McMahon and center Brenton Doyle each hit a double Wednesday to raise their Cactus League averages to .367 (11-for-30).

Prospect watch: Hard-throwing right-hander Jaden Hill came back down to earth Wednesday. Hill entered Wednesday’s game with a 2.23 Cactus League ERA over four innings, having given up just one run, one hit and one walk with six strikeouts. But Hill lacked command Wednesday and was ripped for five runs (four earned) on five hits, including a homer and four doubles.
